Young girl relaxing at homeSclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to treat varicose veins and spider veins. A sclerosing agent is injected into the vein, causing it to scar and collapse. The treated vein then fades away, and blood is redirected to more significant, healthier leg veins. Dr. Margaret Summerville of Chevy Chase Dermatology in Chevy Chase, MD, can help you determine if sclerotherapy is right for your needs.

What type of veins can sclerotherapy treat?

Sclerotherapy is used for both small and prominent veins.

  • Spider veins. It is often used to treat spider veins. These are small and dilated blood vessels found close to the skin's surface. Spider veins are usually red, blue, or purple and are noticeable on the legs or face.
  • Varicose veins. Varicose veins are more prominent veins usually found deeper in the body. They are often painful and can cause serious health complications if left untreated.

What can I expect from my sclerotherapy appointment?

The sclerotherapy procedure is performed in a doctor’s office or outpatient clinic. It usually takes 30 minutes to an hour to complete, depending on the number and size of veins treated.

During the procedure, the doctor will first clean the area where the injection will be given. Next, the doctor will use a very thin needle to inject the sclerosing agent into the vein. You may feel a slight sting when the needle enters your skin. Once the agent has been administered, a compression bandage or stocking will be applied to help keep the medication in place and prevent bruising.

What are the side effects of sclerotherapy?

Most people experience mild side effects after sclerotherapy, such as bruising, swelling, and redness. These side effects usually resolve within a few days to weeks. More severe side effects are rare but can include blood clots, allergic reactions, and skin ulcers.
