HAS COSMETIC SURGERY BECOME THE NEW MAKEUP?

Good looking workers make $230,000.00 more over their lifetime in comparison to the less “aesthetically-appealing” counterparts according to the recent Time magazine article. Additionally in recent years, due to ubiquitous social media and phone cameras, not just celebrities, but all of us can be photographed and “publically-displayed” at any time. Five years ago, Brazil made plastic surgery tax-deductible. Are we next?

Cosmetic enhancements are not just for the rich. In 2005, more than two-thirds of cosmetic surgery patients in the U.S. made $60,000 or less. Cosmetic procedures are becoming more about self-affirmation than vanity. There is evidence that “more attractive individuals receive more preferential treatment throughout their lifespan” according to the Time’s article. Since the introduction of Botox as a cosmetic product in 2002, most of the advances in esthetics have come in dermatology and include introduction of a myriad of facial wrinkle fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane that can give women excellent, natural and long-lasting results eliminating wrinkles and restoring lost volume to the face.

New treatment protocols, such as Forever Young Broadband Light treatments, or micro-needling can not only reverse sun damage and erase fine lines, but potentially prevent further skin aging. Younger and younger women are seeking out these treatments. Have Botox around the eyes, laser resurfacing, tooth whitening, microdermabrasion become basic upkeep? Time magazine’s article concludes that “you are going to get a cosmetic procedure for the same reason that you wear makeup: because every other woman is” and not because you hate yourself, fear aging or are vain.
