As small as spider veins are, they can gang up in clusters and branches, creating unsightly discolored lines on your formerly smooth and sleek legs. Sclerotherapy is a trusted and effective treatment with more than 250 years of great results behind it - and it still ranks supreme among spider vein treatments.

At Chevy Chase Dermatology, our board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Margaret Sommerville, believes in using the most proven techniques to ensure our patients get the lasting results they deserve. For pesky spider veins, that treatment is sclerotherapy. Here's what you should know about this injectable treatment for vanquishing spider veins.

How Does Sclerotherapy Work?

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure to target and eliminate spider veins. Dr. Sommerville injects a sclerosant solution into each vein using a very fine needle for this treatment. The sclerosant irritates the lining of the blood vessels, causing them to collapse and eventually fade from view.

The procedure is quick, typically taking only about 30 minutes in our Chevy Chase office. While you may experience localized burning or cramping during the procedure, most patients find the discomfort mild and temporary. After the injection, we usually apply a dressing to the treated area to promote healing and prevent complications.

What to Expect During Recovery

One of the great advantages of sclerotherapy is that it requires minimal downtime. However, to ensure the best possible results, we recommend wearing compression stockings continuously for about a week following your treatment. This helps to support the treated veins as they heal and promotes optimal circulation in your legs.

How Many Treatments Will You Need?

Achieving the smooth, vein-free legs you desire often requires multiple sclerotherapy sessions. The number of treatments you need varies with the severity of your spider veins and your response to the procedure. Most of our patients get the best results after a short series of sessions, each a few weeks apart.

During your consultation, we develop a personalized treatment plan to help you reach your goals, so you know how many sessions to plan for. Our priority is helping you achieve the results you want long-term so you can feel confident and proud of your legs.
